A switched mode power supply (SMPS) is an electronic power supply that utilises a switching regulator to convert electrical power. This type of power supply is much more efficient than a linear power supply due to the fact that it only draws current from the source when it is required, as opposed to continuously drawing current. SMPS’s are also much smaller in size and weight than linear power supplies, making them ideal for use in portable electronic devices. There are a wide variety of SMPS topologies available, each with its own advantages and disadvantages. The most common types are flyback, forward, push-pull and buck-boost. Switching regulators are also used in a number of other applications such as DC-to-DC conversion and LED lighting.
